Where else could we start than with the excellent
Memsahib's Lounge, situated beneath Neptune Apartments. This tastefully decorated bar and dining destination is reminiscent of the days of the Raj, featuring Experience Menus, Anglo-Indian Tapas small plates and Afternoon Chai.
Our recommendation here would be to go for their excellent
Mensahib's Experience Menu, a culinary tour expertly paired with a unique blend of wines and gin cocktails, that are a feast for the eyes as well as your taste buds. If you are planning an evening at Cheltenham’s Everyman Theatre they also do a special pre-theatre menu. In November 2022 they were awarded a Blue Ribbon Good Food Award and in 2023 were listed in the Michelin Guide. They then retained their Blue Ribbon Good Food Award for 2023/24.
When you stay with us and you dine at Memsahib's Lounge you get 15% off your food bill.
Set in the beautifully restored Rotunda building, in the very social part of Cheltenham called Montpellier, this restaurant is quite literally an 8 minute walk from our apartments (although with some great bars en-route it may take you longer). Their modern British and international menu has something for everybody. They are open 7 days a week for breakfast, brunch, lunch, afternoon tea or dinner. Eating here, always feels like a special occasion. Our top tip when booking is to ask if you can be seated in the Rotunda itself.
This restaurant has established itself as a firm favourite with steak lovers. Proudly offering stylish British cuisine they have an excellent choice of steaks – which includes a 30 oz T-Bone and a 36 oz Chateaubriand. For starters look out for their Ox cured meat board or smoked sticky ribs.
Looking for a refined and sophisticated approach to Indian dining then look no further. Situated in the Bath Road, Cheltenham, just 8 minutes walk from Neptune Apartments (look out for the Playhouse Theatre en-route which used to be home to one of Cheltenham’s Spa Baths). The restaurant promises a memorable dining experience and it never disappoints. Our tip would be to ask the restaurant for their recommendation which they will always make off the back of knowing your likes and dislikes, particularly if the owner Jay Ahmed is on hand. Do not expect just to be able to turn up and get a table though – booking several weeks in advance is likely to be required.
131 (The Promenade) is just a short stroll from Neptune Apartments, situated overlooking Cheltenham’s Imperial Gardens. It offers all day dining options on the 131 Terrace and a new Japanese Sushi Restaurant “Yoku” which opened in March 2022. 131 has large covered outdoor seating areas and is a great spot to people watch, the food is very good and reasonably priced.
One of our favourites, this restaurant is discretely tucked away in Montpellier Courtyard. The brainchild of Chef Lee Gallimore, who has been Chef at many of Cheltenham’s destination restaurants, Gallimore’s Kitchen has great seafood options and a varied menu featuring fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Gallimore’s has inside tables and covered tables in the courtyard. Look out for their Chateaubriand and Surf and Turf sharing boards.
Sef Steakhouse
Şef (pronounced 'chef') Steakhouse (picture above) is the first UK venture for restauranteurs Metin Civlak, Mert Aras and Kaan Kucukagalar, who have a combined 30 years' experience in the business from opening and running restaurants in Turkey and Kuwait. You can expect premium cuts of meat, dry-aged & cooked over charcoal. They'll also be able to see inside the busy kitchen, with many dishes finished at the table for that extra wow-factor.
Sef is literally a 3 minute walk from Neptune Apartments, situated in a building called The Quadrangle. As well as the steaks they are renowned for we thought the Lamb Chops were amazing and we were impressed by their selection for vegetarians. The service here is excellent.
Purslane
Purslane gets its name from a low trailing plant that can be foraged on the seashore. It will come as no surprise then that this restaurant’s highly regarded reputation is built on its fish. Purslane is a small, independently owned family restaurant that offers a relaxed fine dining experience with sustainably sourced fish and Cotswold produce. Their menus change bi-monthly to reflect the seasons and also include meat, game and vegetarian dishes. They also offer working lunches and a tasting menu.
Suffolk Rock
Suffolk Rock is independently run bistro restaurant in Suffolk Parade about a 15 minute walk from Neptune Apartments (the shortest and best route cutting through Montpellier Gardens). They serve modern British food made with local and organic ingredients and are open for dinner Wednesday to Saturday. They are also our favourite spot in Cheltenham for Sunday lunch.
The Nook on Five
The Nook on Five is a relatively recent addition to the Cheltenham dining scene. Situated on top of an office and restaurant complex called The Quadrangle they pride themselves on offering the very best of modern British.
Serving Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner, you can dine whilst enjoying the views overlooking the Cotswolds and the rooftops of Montpellier.
Both the food and service are of a very high standard here, which keeps us coming back. The restaurant also has an excellent ambience, particularly when there is live music. The Nook on Five is just 2-3 minute walk from Neptune Apartments.
We hope you enjoy our recommendations. Bon apetit!
